The Bobo shield mask originates from the Bobo people of Burkina Faso and Mali. These large, flat, and abstract masks are often carved from wood and painted in bold patterns using black, white, red, and earth tones. The designs feature geometric motifs that symbolize elements of nature and spirituality.
Bobo shield masks are used in agricultural ceremonies to honor Dwo, the god of fertility and farming. They are also worn during rituals to ensure good harvests, ward off evil spirits, and restore harmony to the community. Performers wearing these masks often dance energetically, holding them horizontally or vertically, mimicking movements that symbolize balance and protection.
