The Songye mask (also called Sunghe mask) originates from the Songye people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. These masks are characterized by their striking geometric designs, sharp angles, and bold, linear patterns. They are typically carved from wood and sometimes adorned with raffia, metal, or feathers, enhancing their dramatic and imposing appearance.

The Songye masks are primarily associated with the Bwadi bwa Kifwebe secret society, which plays a central role in maintaining social order, enforcing laws, and warding off malevolent forces. The masks are divided into two main types:

  • Male masks (often with large crests) symbolize power, aggression, and protection.
  • Female masks (simpler and rounder) represent fertility and harmony.

These masks are used in rituals for initiation, healing, and community safeguarding, embodying both spiritual and social functions.
